What’s Savvy Girl About?

Chrissy Gibbons is in over her head.

As a high school intern at Savvy in New York City, the aspiring journalist has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to write a monthly column for the magazine called Savvy Girl. All she has to do is write the best essay about the challenges facing young women today and the column is hers. It’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to her. So why can’t she do it? For one thing, the internship is a full-time job. Her boss is in the middle of planning her wedding and dumps all her work on Chrissy. For another, there’s that cute boy upstairs who she’s trying to impress. (Talk about a full-time job!) Plus, she has all those parties to go to with Savvy’s supercool fashion editor. (Hello! She used to be a supermodel. You tell her you’re too busy to go to a bash for Stella McCartney.)

With so much going on, the Savvy Girl article falls off the radar. So does her best friend. And her priorities. And everything she thought she believed in.

Who’s in Savvy Girl?

Chrissy Gibbons  Aspiring journalist and editor of her high school paper, Chrissy can’t think of a better way to spend the summer before her senior year than as an intern at Savvy, her favorite magazine. Earnest and serious, she wears a simple gray suit to work on her first day because she wants to look professional. Everyone else wears bright, fun summer clothes and she instantly feels awkward and uncomfortable. Although she knows she can write a great Savvy Girl essay, Chrissy is self-conscious and insecure when she sees how confident the other interns are. Jessica Cordero, a supermodel turned supercool fashion editor, likes Chrissy and invites her to some parties.

Hallie  One of the other high school interns at Savvy. She intimidates Chrissy because she seems to have everything together. Not only does she know her way around the offices before lunch on day one, she already has an idea for her Savvy Girl essay. Plus, she met the Dalai Lama for real, whereas Chrissy has only met his wax statue at Madame Tussauds.

Jessica Cordero  Savvy’s fashion editor. A former supermodel, she gave up modeling at the height of her career to go to college and have a normal life. For this reason Chrissy looks up to her and is amazed/excited/flattered when Jessica talks to her. Later, Jessica invites Chrissy to a few parties. Jessica is everything Chrissy thinks a former supermodel/fashion editor should be, including British.

Lily Carmichael  Chrissy’s best friend. She works at the beach as a lifeguard. Her parents are in the middle of a messy divorce and are trying to buy her loyalty. Cynical, Lily lets them. She plays it like she doesn’t care, but Chrissy knows she’s hurt by the divorce. A serial dater, Lily changes boyfriends all the time. She’s currently interested in Graham McPhee.

Michael Davies  An intern at another publication. He’s a junior in college and jaded. He’s not impressed with anything. Chrissy is impressed with his cool sophistication and plans out conversations just in case she bumps into him in the elevator lobby. (OK, so maybe she sometimes stakes out the elevator lobby.)

Graham McPhee  Another lifeguard at the beach. He works alongside Lily and may or may not be dating her. Chrissy thinks he’s nice enough but boring and a know-it-all.

What Happens in Savvy Girl?

The First Day  So far things are not going well. Despite all her planning, Chrissy isn’t making the wonderful first impression she’d expected. Her professional gray suit makes her look dumpy next to the bright summery clothes everyone else is wearing yes, even the other interns. She can’t find her way around and keeps getting lost. She has no idea what she’s going to write for the Savvy Girl competition and Hallie already has a topic. And worse of all, Hallie makes fun of her for having a photo of her and Dalai Lama from Madame Tussauds in front on the entire staff. How can Chrissy make a good second impression?

The Crush  The moment Chrissy sees Michael Davies she falls in love. He’s gorgeous. And, at twenty, an older man. Stuck in a tedious company-wide intern orientation, Chrissy passes the time imagining all the witty remarks she’ll make to Michael to impress him with her brilliance. When a break finally comes, Chrissy makes a beeline for the Rice Crispy treats. Hungry and bored, she takes three. Having something to look forward to will make the time go faster. But then Michael Davies comes over and asks if he can have one of her treats. Oh, no, he knows she took three. How can Chrissy impress him now?

The Party  In a moment of weakness, Chrissy does the unthinkable—invites Michael to a party for Stella McCartney’s new line at H&M. It’s crazy because she herself is a guest of Savvy’s fashion editor, and in order to get him on the list, she had to call the publicist and actually pretend to be Jessica Cordero. Now she’s at the party and terrified that she might bump into the publicist. Or that the publicist might mention the last-minute addition to Jessica. Will Chrissy get through the party without getting caught?

The Beach  Chrissy came to the beach to have lunch with her best friend, Lily, not Lily’s new boyfriend, Graham. But that’s just what happens when Lily has to go back to work and Graham shows up with a tray full of food. Forced to keep him company, she sulks silently, trying to come up with a good excuse to leave. Graham breaks the silence by defending a band he saw with her and Lily a few weeks ago. Despite herself, Chrissy is drawn into the conversation and discovers that Graham is funny, sweet and interesting (and kinda cute). What will happen when Lily comes back?
